PREVENTIVE SCREENING OF SENIOR FERRETS
Senior ferrets are at an increased risk for several chronic illnesses. Above 5 years old many of their common problems can appear simultaneously. These animals are frequently losing their haircoat, they drink more and urinate more, their weight either drops or increases without any obvious reason, their hind limbs can become weak and they frequently munch their food. Behind these symptoms are usually complex diseases, like hyperadrenocorticism, insulinomas, dental disease, heart disease or renal insufficiency. Early diagnosis is essential for the treatment of these diseases and as a result, necessary for providing a good quality of life for the senior pet. For these reasons we advise the complex examination of ferrets above the age of 5 years, which includes detailed physical- and oral examination, bloodwork and urinalysis, and if necessary a referral to an ultrasound specialist as well.
