NEUTERING, HORMONE IMPLANT

In ferrets the inhibition of gonadal function is an important topic in both genders. In males the main reasons are their strong sexual odor and aggressive behaviour. In females their oestrus only stops if they mate with a male, and a prolonged oestrus can cause serious illnesses, so in their case it is essential for their long term health to inhibit gonadal function. In ferrets surgical neutering can cause an elevated risk of another hormonal disease, the overactivity of the adrenal glands, so we prefer to protect them with a hormonal implant. This implant contains deslorelin, which chemically neuters the animals for about 1,5-2 years, without any known side effects. At our clinic we only advise the surgical removal of the gonads if they are definitely diseased.
