PREVENTIVE AND SCREENING EXAMINATIONS

PREVENTIVE AND SCREENING EXAMINATIONS

Ornamental birds are very good at hiding any symptoms. In many cases they only show symptoms that are also visible to the owners when they are in a severe, frequently unsavable state. Many of their illnesses can be prevented with proper husbandry and nutrition, and with early identification they are usually treatable. We advise an annual preventive examination that includes a detailed physical examination, husbandry consultation, laboratory examination of blood and faeces, and depending on the species diagnostic imaging. This is especially important in long living parrot species and when purchasing a new bird, prior to introducing them or pairing them up. Ornamental birds can carry many diseases asymptomatically, that can cause problems later in their life, and can be an infection hazard for other birds. At our clinic we offer specific screening tests that are developed for common infectious parrot diseases (PBFD, Polyoma, Chlamydophila, Borna). It is advised to perform these additional screenings for infectious diseases as well, prior to purchasing high value birds or pairing them up.
