URINARY DISEASES

In rabbits urinary diseases can cause many different symptoms. They can cause general symptoms like many other illnesses, such as inappetence and lethargy. Sometimes the only sign can be increased thirst. More specific symptoms include straining to urinate and blood in the urine. Some amount of visible sediment (sludge) or a reddish colored pigment (porphyrin) can be normal. If we see straining or blood in the urine, urgent veterinary care is necessary. It is important to know that bloody urine and straining in intact female rabbits is usually a sign of a bleeding uterus and in most cases necessitates surgery.
